Introduction to Research Data Management

Scientists collect ever-increasing amounts of data that have to be stored, interpreted and shared. Furthermore, funding agencies, journals and academic institutions regularly issue new guidelines and policies regarding data management. As a result, successful research data management has become both a key skill and a major challenge for many scientists. In this workshop, experts from ETH Zurich Scientific IT Services will provide an overview of best practices and tools for the daily management of data during the lifetime of a research project. In particular, the course introduces tools to manage primary data, notes, inventories and code in order to keep track of information from the acquisition to the final publication of results. Finally, the open source tool openBIS (https://labnotebook.ch/) is presented as an example of a comprehensive data management system for research groups in quantitative domains.

Topics to be covered include:
  • Data management planning
  • Data documentation and metadata
  • Tools for daily management of data
  • Electronic laboratory notebooks
  • Safe data storage and backup
  • Reproducibility and reusability
  • Working with Big Data

This course is organised by our colleagues at ETH Scientific IT Services (SIS). SIS has extensive experience of research data management, including the development of the research data management platform openBIS. Via the openRDM.swiss project mandated by swissuniversities, SIS offers a national research data management service to the whole of the Swiss academic community.
