2020-06-23 Introduction to Containers (09:00-17:00)

Run your own environment on other systems, e.g. UBELIX

Tabs

Containers

Linux containers are self-contained execution environments -- with their own, isolated CPU, memory, block I/O, and network resources -- that share the kernel of the host operating system. Using containers means that you can run your own laptop research environment on other systems. The central university linux HPC cluster UBELIX now provides the Singularity container environment. If couldn't use UBELIX before, now you can !

Learning outcomes - participants can
  • Install container software on own computer
  • Create containers for own application
  • Run own applications in a container on HPC and cloud systems
Target group
  • UNIBE staff members, students and potential users involved in scientific research
  • Researchers wishing to learn how to use a Linux HPC system, in particular UBELIX, with containers
  • Prospective or current users of any Linux computing facility
Prerequisites
  • Participants must bring own laptops and should have a minimal Linux and HPC usage knowledge see training Introduction to Linux and UBELIX.
