2020-08-17 DSF 1 Introduction to Programming (Python) (09:00-17:00)

Get introduced into algorithmic thinking and programming with Python.

About this training
Programming

Algorithms and programming are important tools in data driven research. Python is a good scripting language widely used to make pipelines of tasks typical for large computations and analysis on large datasets. It suits the purpose of starting programming in it, as well. https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Python_(Programmiersprache).

People new to programming may attend DSF 1-3. Due to the large content amount, it is for those not recommeded to attend DSF 4-5 in the same block.

  • History of Algothims and Computing
  • About scripting and Python
  • Syntax and variables
  • Scalar data types and data structures
  • Program loops and conditionals
  • Program functions and data structures
  • Error handling
  • Iterators
  • List comprehensions
  • Generator expressions
  • Manipulate strings and regular expressions
  • Plotting
Target group
  • UNIBE staff members, students and potential users interested in programming.
Prerequisites 
  • Participants must bring own laptops.
  • No programming experience required. This is a crash course for beginners. 
Methods
  • The training alternates between short theoretical introductions and programming exercises.
Certificate 
  • A certificate will be delivered to participants who have attended the whole training.
  • Participants attending  DSF 1-3 are offered to make a project (30 hours). Upon a successful presentation 2 ECTS credit points are given.
