Free and Open Source Software (FOSS) and Licensing

Software Licenses are contracts in which the owner of a computer program regulates who and under which conditions the code can be used, modified and distributed. Free and Open Source Software Licenses allow everyone to use, study, modify and (re)distribute code.


Learning outcomes

The main objectives of this workshop are getting an overview of the various ways of licensing your computer program and learning about the different Free and Open Source Software Licenses that are available.

At the end of the course you will be able to:
  • determine who is the owner of the code that you or someone else wrote
  • recognize different ways of licensing your code
  • differentiate between different free and open source software licenses as well as different scopes of copyleft;
  • identify pros and cons of different licensing models;
  • find the license that best fits your needs to distribute your own code;
  • determine when and how you are allowed to use and reuse code which is owned by others.

Target group
  • People working on (research), or intend to work on software projects, individually or in teams.
Prerequisites
  • Participants must bring own laptops.
Certificate
  • A certificate will be delivered to participants who have attended the whole training. The certificate is valid as one half day in module 4 of the CAS Applied Data Science.

  • Suzanna Marazza is a member of CCdigitallaw and a legal counsel. She is specialized in intellectual property law and licensing, especially Free and Open Source Software Licenses.
