SA 2010 Week 2: Political Economy of Trade

This course examines the links between foreign policy and trade, and discriminatory trade agreements as an instrument of foreign policy. It discusses problems of coherence between the WTO and other international organisations, the political issues surrounding trade and development, and prospects for structural reform of the WTO.

Kursbeschreibung
• To appreciate the political environment in which trade policy is made, both at the domestic and the international levels;
• To understand the ways in which scholars and policymakers have conceived of the relationship between power and wealth as foundations, instruments, and objectives of national policy;
• To review how the rules and norms of the trading system deal with issues that lay at the intersection of politics and economics; and
• To enhance the abilities of students to conduct research, prepare positions, and present arguments on these subjects.
