• Understanding standards and problems relating to admission and treatment of investors and investments
• Understanding the main characteristics of dispute settlement relating to investment, in particular investor-state arbitration
• Being able to read and analyze an arbitral award
• Understanding current challenges for the global investment regime (bilateral and multilateral instruments) as well as the related dispute settlement mechanisms

• Distinguishing between different types of investments (FDI vs portfolio investment; resource-seeking vs. market seeking vs. efficiency seeking investment) and their motivations
• Understanding key patterns and recent trends in cross-border investment activity.
• Understanding the main theories of FDI: why does FDI occur and what factors drive its direction, form and magnitude?
• Debating the role that multinational enterprises can play in maximizing the developmental returns of FDI
• FDI and sustainable development: debating where the balance lies
• Understanding the incipient network of rules governing investment at the bilateral, regional and multilateral levels
