Linux
Linux is a Unix-like computer operating system assembled under the model of free and open-source software development and distribution. Linux is the leading operating system on servers, mainframe computers and supercomputers. It also runs on embedded systems, for example mobile phones and tablet computers, as well as televisions.
Goal
Learn how to connect to a Linux system and basic command line usage, i.e you will be shown the basic commands in order to take advantage of computing facilities like the UBELIX HPC cluster. This is a crash course to get you started, with mentions of further topics to look into.

Learn how to connect to a Linux system and basic command line usage, i.e you will be shown the basic commands in order to take advantage of computing facilities like the UBELIX HPC cluster. This is a crash course to get you started, with mentions of further topics to look into.
Learning objectives
- Linux overview
- Connecting to a remote machine from a Linux, Windows or Mac machine
- Introduction to command line interface (CLI, shell), self-help on command usage
- The directory tree and navigation therein; permissions and ownership
- Creating, copying, also from remote machines, moving and deleting files
- Reading and writing files with CLI tools
- Standard I/O, pipes
- Background jobs, detached sessions with
screen
- Simple shell scripting
- Customizing the environment
- UNIBE staff, students and potential users involved in scientific research
- Researchers wishing to learn how to use a Linux system with little-to-no prior knowledge
- Prospective or current users of any Linux computing facility who wish to refresh the basics
- Participants must bring own laptops
- Either of:
- Internet access during the training, to connect to a provided remote Linux machine(For external users, vouchers for public wifi can be provided on request)
- Access to your own Linux system or virtual machine
- [Optional] Activated UBELIX account (see Account activation) to use UBELIX for exercises
- The training alternates between short theoretical introductions and command line exercises
- A certificate will be delivered to participants who have attended the whole training
- The coaches are local or external experts
