Patents and European Patent Law

Patents represent a key enabler of innovation and economic growth. They allow to efficiently protect intellectual property in return to the disclosure of the invention. Within this context, this seminar will provide an introduction to the various aspects of patenting and will allow participants to identify whether they have a patentable invention and how to start the process.

Learning outcomes - participants can/know
  1. What is a patent and why patents trigger growth? Practical examples of how patents can help a startup grow will be shown to motivate and show the importance of the topic.
  2. The European Patent System. A review of the EPC (European Patent Convention). The European Patent Office. The World Intellectual Property Organization.
  3. Patentability criteria. Novelty and Inventive Step. The main patentability criteria will be reviewed and illustrated by examples.
  4. Life of a patent. What happens from the moment of filing a patent to the moment of delivery? And after?
  5. Practical examples of patent litigation cases in software.
Target group
  • UNIBE staff members, students and potential authors of patents.

The lecturer and coach for this training is Johann Stan. He has a PhD in computer science. He is passionate about innovation, research and development.
Author of patents, publications and prototypes in various scientific fields, such as information extraction, privacy preservation, semantic web and recommendation mechanisms, he is interested in developing technology that improves people's lives. Currently he is a patent examiner at the European Patent Office.
