Visualizing and Communicating Data with R
The creation and communication of data visualizations are critical steps in any data analytic project. Modern open-source software packages offer ever-more powerful data visualization tools. When users apply these tools with psychological and design principles in mind, they can lead to effective publication-ready data visualizations with little effort. Some of the most powerful tools to create data visualizations are available in the programming language R. In this course, participants learn how to employ R and state-of-the-art visualization and reporting packages to communicate critical insights about data through visualizations and reports.
Course Objectives
Each day will contain a series of short lectures and demonstrations that introduce and discuss new topics. The bulk of each day will be dedicated to hands-on exercises to help participants ‘learn by doing.’ In these exercises, participants will learn how to read in and prepare data, how to create various types of static and interactive data visualizations, how to tweak them to exactly fit one’s needs, and how to embed them in digital reports.
Target group
  • Students and Staff of UniBe.
Prerequisites
  • Basic knowledge of descriptive statistics, data analysis, and R is useful but not necessary.
  • Participants need to bring their own laptops and complete our detailed installation instructions for R and RStudio (both open-source software) prior to the course.
Methods
Hands-on exercises.
Certificate
  • A certificate will be delivered to participants who have attended the whole training.
Coaches
  • Dirk U. Wulff is a senior research scientist at the Max Planck Institute for Human Development, specializing in big data approaches to understanding human cogcognition, and the founder of The R Bootcamp.
  • Michael Schulte-Mecklenbeck is an associate professor for research methodology and decision making at the department of Business Administration, University of Bern, specializing in tracing human decision processes through eye- and movement-tracking technology, and a lecturer for The R Bootcamp.
The R Bootcamp is a team of Swiss-based data scientists who have jointly spent over 25 years doing data science with R for both research and industry.
