Notes on operation with assistive technologies
You can actively operate ILIAS with assistive technologies and carry out interactions. The element that holds the focus is visually highlighted.
Orientation using ARIA Landmark Roles and headings
The most critical areas of ILIAS are semantically labeled (ARIA Landmark Roles). You can navigate within the page using these markups.
- The main menu, header, breadcrumb navigation, and tree structure are marked as navigation.
- The main content area is marked up as main content.
- The header is marked as a banner; its essential actions are dialogs, and the search is highlighted separately.
- The contents are marked up with headings.
Screen reader optimization
- Log in to ILIAS.
- Open the avatar menu in the header.
- Select Settings.
- ILIAS displays the General Settings form.
- Activate the Screen Reader Optimization check box.
- Click Save.

Structure
This section briefly explains the basic structure of the pages to make them easier for visually impaired people to use:
- All pages have a header with the installation title and user-related services: Profile and Privacy, and Settings. The main menu with the various entries is on the left-hand side. Click on an entry to open a toolbar with further entries.
- Workspace combines your calendar, current semester, courses and groups, a list of your most recently visited objects, favorites and tags, portfolios, and notes.
- The entry Unibe offers a homepage for direct access to the content tree, a tree view, and a link to the iTools area.
- Messages bundles the mail, news and comments services.
- Support offers direct access to the ILIAS support area.
Navigation
Pages in the magazine have a breadcrumb navigation. Each page displays the title of the object you are in. You can open listed objects by clicking on their title. Alternatively, you can navigate using a structure tree. The objects have a tab navigation, which differs from object to object. The most important tabs are the following:
- The Content tab is the most important for learning activities; it’s where you can find the learning content. Some content tabs have a side column with blocks of additional services such as calendars or news.
- The Info tab lists the object's metadata. You start surveys and tests on this tab.
- The Members tab shows the users you are working with in this object.
- In the Learning Progress tab, you can monitor your progress.
- In the Settings tab, you can configure the object using forms if you have the appropriate permissions.
Search
The search function can be found in the top right of the header. You can enter a keyword in the text input field. You can choose whether to search the entire magazine or only your current position (the object you are in and all objects contained therein). Your last search result is always linked, and you can return to it.
